Is there a minimum/maximum age limit for pilots?
There is no maximum age limit to obtain or hold a pilot certificate in the U.S. but you do need to pass a medical exam. While there's no maximum age for holding an ATP certificate, airline pilots in Part 121 operations (major and regional airlines) have a mandatory retirement age of 65, but congress is considering changes to this rule.
The minimum age to get certificates are as follows:
- Student Pilot Certificate: 16 years old (14 for gliders and balloons).
- Private Pilot Certificate: 17 years old (16 for gliders and balloons).
- Commercial Pilot Certificate: 18 years old.
Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) Certificate: 23 years old if obtained through traditional methods.
However, under specific provisions and approved training programs, it's possible to obtain an ATP with Restricted Privileges at 21 years old.
